Established in 2001, the Centre for the Study of Britain and its Empire is devoted to research in the broad field of British history since the mid-eighteenth century. The Centre is based in the History Department of Southampton University (rated 5A in the 2001 RAE) and utilises the expertise of several of its staff: Professor Miles Taylor (the British empire, radicalism, and parliamentary politics), Dr John Oldfield (anti-slavery), Dr Peter Gray (19th century Ireland and India), Dr Waltraud Ernst (colonial medicine), Dr Jane McDermid (Scottish women's education in the 19th and 20th centuries), and Dr Adrian Smith (20th century urban, press, military and sports history).
