This website is based on an in-house exhibition at The New York Public Library in 2001. It contains maps from 1540 to 1900 and intends to "reveal the evolution on paper from an imagined West to a mapped West, seemingly defined yet still a fiction of sorts." The presented materials are drawn primarily from the map division of the New York Public Library, which includes the Lawrence H. Slaughter Collection and the Levine Bequest. "The accompanying text is well written and addresses itself to exploding some of the myths about the Frontier, including the myth of the West as settled by lone pioneers. The maps are fascinating and allow for viewing in several sizes." (Internet Scout Project,
