English Heritage is the lead body protecting the nation's heritage and the Government's statutory adviser on England's built heritage, including archaeology. It manages over 400 of the country's most important buildings and monuments, which attract more than 10 million visitors a year. From 1 April 1999 it also makes available the National Monuments Record, a public archive of over 12 million items, and the national programme to survey and record the historic environment as part of merger with the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
