This is the companion site to a PBS documentary from 1998. Based on the diary of Martha Ballard, an eighteenth-century midwife and healer in Maine, it conveys a picture of women's life in the early American republic. The site provides transcripts and facsimiles from the diary, background information, a bibliography, and several interviews with the documentary's author.
