The Historical New York Times Project

The Historical New York Times Project is the first of a series of projects undertaken by the Universal Library at Carnegie Mellon University, to provide everyone with a glimpse into the actual events as they were seen by the people of the day. [...] We have chosen to take as our first venture the history of the American 'Civil War,' or 'War Between the States.' Chapter 2, The War Years, is presented on our site for your reading pleasure. What we have scanned are films of the original, now long-gone, newspaper pages. We have taken every effort to make these digital scans of film images easy to read, and will be providing much more detailed indexing and full-text over time. Currently this site features articles from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette dealing with World War II.
