Historical Manuscripts Commission

The Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts was set up in 1869 to enquire and report on collections of papers of value for the study of British history in private hands. In 1959 this was enlarged to all records outside of the Public Record. The Commission has published 239 volume of reports. It maintains the National Register of Archives, the Manorial Documents Register and ARCHON, the gateway for archivists in the United Kingdom.
